ADGP visits spot, sets up SIT to probe mishap

A day after DGP Suresh Arora stated that a parallel probe would be conducted by ADGP (Government Railway Police) IPS Sahota in the Amritsar train tragedy, the latter along with local police officials visited the spot on Monday.

He said a special investigating team (SIT) had been formed, which would be headed by Assistant Inspector General (GRP) Daljit Singh Rana, while he would supervise the probe for its completion in three months. DSP Surinder Kumar, Inspector Nirmal Singh and SHO GRP Balvir Singh Ghuman will be SIT members. The team would be stationed at Amritsar and start working in a day or two.

Sahota said every aspect of the tragic mishap, including the role of Railways employees, would be looked into by the SIT. “We will talk to the railway officials to see where the lapses were and check if the requisite permissions were given or not,” he said.

Sahota said there was no information about the presence of huge number of people at the railway line to the GRP here. Otherwise, official would have been deputed to clear the area, he said.

The GRP have registered a case against unknown persons on the charges of culpable homicide, causing death by negligence and other relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Div commissioner initiates inquiry 

Amritsar: Divisional Commissioner, Jalandhar, B Purushartha, who has been assigned the magisterial inquiry into the Amritsar railway tragedy by the state government, started the probe here on Monday. On the first day, he met with senior officials of the police and civil administration. While addressing a press conference, Purushartha assured that he would examine the case from all angles and it would be fare and transparent. The role of all the government agencies and individuals concerned would be examined and the probe would fix the responsibility accordingly, the Divisional Commissioner said. The report of the probe would also suggest remedial measures to assure that such incidents did not occur again. “I have made preliminary discussion with four agencies — the police, Municipal Corporation, Railways and the district administration,” he said.
