Chandigarh, June 28

A delegation of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), led by senior party leaders Harpal Singh Cheema (LoP) and MLA Aman Arora, met Governor VP Singh Badnore today on high power tariff in the state. This meeting was part of the ongoing “Bijli andolan” launched by the state unit of the party on June 24.

Addressing mediapersons after submitting a memorandum to the Governor, the AAP leaders said the electricity tariff had touched a new high.

Arora, who is also coordinator of the “Bijli andolan”, said electricity was costlier in Punjab than other states.

The AAP leaders urged the Governor to intervene and get PPAs signed between the previous Badal government and private power plants scrapped.

Arora said the Congress government led by Capt Amarinder Singh should initiate steps to curb the rise in power tariff. Citing the Delhi model, Arora said the Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi Government had taken hard steps to tame the power mafia during its four-year regime, providing cheaper electricity to consumers even as it procures electricity from private power plants.

Arora said if the Delhi Government could provide cheaper electricity in the national capital, why the state government had been shying away from replicating the model in Punjab.

He added that the Governor had assured the delegation of taking up the issue with the state government for redressal.
