8 killed in MUV-truck collision in Mansa

MANSA: Eight people, including three women and two children, were killed and seven others injured as the MUV they were travelling in collided with a truck on Bhikhi Road here today.

Eight people, including three women and two children, were killed and seven others injured as the MUV they were travelling in collided with a truck on Bhikhi Road here today.

The victims, all residents of Kansal near Chandigarh, were on the way to Gogamedi shrine in Rajasthan to pay obeisance.

The accident took place when the MUV driver tried to overtake a bus. The impact of the accident was such that six persons died on the spot, said Bhikhi police station SHO Paramjit Singh.

The injured were first taken to the Civil Hospital in Bhikhi, where two more succumbed to their injuries. The rest were then taken to the Civil Hospital in Mansa from where two seriously injured were referred to Rajindra Hospital in Patiala.

SSP Parambir Singh Parmar, SDM Latif Ahmed and civil surgeon Dr Sunil Pathak reached the spot. “Although the truck driver managed to flee the spot, we have impounded the truck. A case has been registered,” the SSP said.

As per the police, Anil Kumar, who used to give his car on rent, was driving his family to Bangar village in Rajasthan. Anil Kumar, Pratap Singh, Aarti, Rithik, Hari Singh, Vidyawati, Ramavati and Munim lost their lives in the accident. Rohit Kumar, Binder Kumar, Bindra Rani, Ajay Kumar, Chander Bhan, Lakshmi Devi and Guddi are undergoing treatment.

The vehicle got badly damaged in the accident and people had a tough time taking out the injured as well as the bodies out of the multi-utility vehicle.
