Seven people, including three women and a child, died as an SUV they were travelling in rammed a truck parked outside a dhaba at Khalchian on the national highway near here on Monday morning.

Of the eight car occupants, only a three-year-old child survived, who got serious injuries and was hospitalised here.

Most of the deceased were residents of Delhi and were returning from a shrine in Himachal Pradesh.

The deceased have been identified as Arvind Sharma, Sawita Sharma, Mani Sharma and Shewash Sharma, all residents of Utam Nagar in New Delhi. Sunil and Poonam were natives of Jhajjar in Haryana.

The incident took place around 5.30 outside a dhaba on the highway. The dhaba owner claimed that the truck driver had just parked the truck on the roadside when the speeding SUV hit the truck from behind.

The SUV was badly damaged. The police and a medical team reached the spot.

Avtar Singh, SHO, Khalchian police station, said, “We have informed the families. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem. We are investigating the cause of the accident.”
