A local court today sentenced seven persons, including father and maternal uncle of a girl, to life imprisonment in an honour killing case.

They were awarded punishment for killing an 18-year-old boy of Mehmoodran village, Ludhiana, who had fallen in love with their girl.

The convicts are Jagdish Kumar, father of the girl; Munish Saharan, her maternal uncle; Lakhbir Singh, Jagdeep Singh, Saurav Kumar, Sukhvinder Singh and Sanjiv Kumar.

The court of Additional Sessions Judge also imposed a penalty of Rs 50,000 on each of them. Of this amount, Rs 2 lakh will be paid to the victim’s family as compensation.

A case against them was registered at the sadar police station on March 22, 2012, following the statement of Kuldeep Singh, father of the victim.

The complainant had told the police that his son had developed relations with a girl, adding that the girl’s uncle had given threats to his son to stay away from her or he would be killed.

“On March 21, 2012, a few youths entered our house at midnight and forcibly took away my son. Two days later, his body was found beneath the Ramgarh bridge in Morinda,” the complainant said, adding that the accused took the boy to a factory in Rajpura and killed him. The prosecution examined 17 witnesses to prove the guilt of the accused.
