Five members of a Jammu-based family died near Pachranga village in the district when the Maruti Alto car (JK 02 AS 0970) they were travelling in rammed into a Toyota Innova here this morning.

Dev Raj (60), his wife Lajwanti, Darshan Kumar (58), his wife Rajkumaari and one Sunil Kumar, who was driving the car, died on the spot. The victims were residents of Chakrohi village in Suchetgarh in Jammu.

The Innova was being driven by Maninderdeep Singh. He was taking his Canada-based relative Satpal Singh and his two daughters Navkiran Kaur (10) and one-year old Navjit Kaur to his village Ghorabahi. All of them sustained injuries and were taken to a private hospital in the city. Their condition is said to be stable.

The police said the driver of the Alto car lost control over the vehicle and crossed over to the wrong side of the road that caused head-on collision with the Innova.

The postmortem was conducted at the civil hospital in the evening. The bodies were later handed over to Dev Raj’s son, who works at a bank in Amritsar.

Gurinderjit Singh Nagra, SHO, Bhogpur police station, said, “We have lodged an FIR in the case. It seemed that a tyre of the Alto car bursted which led to the mishap. Further investigation in the case is on.”
