11 policemen among 13 held guilty of jail inmate’s murder

Thirteen persons, including 11 policemen, were convicted by the Court of Additional Sessions Judge here for kidnapping and murdering jail inmate Bikramjit Singh.

The inmate was a murder convict and was under treatment at Guru Nanak Dev Hospital when he was abducted by a police team in May 2014, which later tortured him to death at a tractor agency in Batala.

Among those convicted include Inspector Narang Singh, ASI Gulshanbir Singh, ASI Sawinder Singh, Head Constables Jagjit Singh, Gurpreet Singh, Lakhwinder Singh, Constables Makhtool Singh, Angrej Singh, Lakhwinder Singh, Amandeep Singh and Randhir Singh, Deep Raj Singh, the tractor agency owner and police informer Jagtar Singh, alias Kansi.

ASI Gulshanbir was heading the party that kidnapped Bikramjit from the hospital while Narang Singh had joined them in Batala where the victim was allegedly tortured by the policemen.

All the accused were charged by the court under Sections 302, 364, 342 and 120B of the IPC, said public prosecutor Ritu Kumar, while adding that the quantum of punishment would be announced on Monday. She said 14 persons were nominated as accused in the case and of them, ASI Baljit Singh was declared a proclaimed offender and was yet to be arrested.

Following the abduction of Bikramjit Singh, the police had initially registered a case against him on May 6, 2014, while alleging that he had escaped from police custody from the hospital premises.

Later, a complaint was filed by his family members who alleged that he was kidnapped by a police team on May 7.

Convict had killed Akali leader in 2002

Bikramjit Singh, along with several others, had shot six persons, including SAD leader Gurdial Singh, in Algo Kothi village at Bhikhiwind in Tarn Tarn in 2002. He was convicted in the case and was lodged in the Amritsar jail. He had developed some orthopaedic problem and had been admitted at Guru Nanak Dev Hospital
