Death in police firing: 3 decades on, court puts state on notice

CHANDIGARH: More than three decades after four persons were killed in police firing, the Punjab and Haryana High Court today issued notice of motion for August 14 to the state, former Chief Secretary Darbara Singh Guru and ex-DGP Mohd Izhar Alam on a petition filed by seeking the constitution of a special investigating team for probing the “entire matter”.

More than three decades after four persons were killed in police firing, the Punjab and Haryana High Court today issued notice of motion for August 14 to the state, former Chief Secretary Darbara Singh Guru and ex-DGP Mohd Izhar Alam on a petition filed by seeking the constitution of a special investigating team for probing the “entire matter”.

The notice came on a petition filed by Baldev Singh, through counsel HC Arora. Directions were also sought for registering an FIR for murder and other offences under Sections 302, 307 and 34 of the IPC against the police officials responsible for the “unjustified police firing” in view of inquiry report submitted by the “Justice Gurnam Singh Commission of Inquiry, Punjab”.

Arora submitted that Guru, Alam and another police officer were indicted for unjustified firing by the police on persons taking out a protest march against the burning of holy “Birs” of Shri Guru Granth Sahib at Nakodar on February 2, 1986. — TNS
