The recent rains have led to an escalation in the prices of vegetables, adding to the worries of people. Notably, the rain has caused massive damage to growing vegetables, thus disrupting the supply.

A visit to the vegetable market revealed that bottle gourd, tomatoes and capsicum were the worst hit. The price of tomatoes is presently Rs50 per kg, which was Rs30 per kg earlier.

Similarly, bottle gourd is now being sold at Rs40 per kg, which was earlier available at Rs15 per kg. The price of capsicum too increased from Rs40 per kg to Rs80 per kg.

The price of brinjal, ridge gourd, lady finger has increased from Rs30 to Rs40 for a kg. Further, the price of spinach has risen from Rs15 per kg to Rs20 per kg. Cauliflower, which was earlier available at Rs40 per kg, is now being sold at Rs50 per kg.

A vegetable vendor said, “The prices have increased by around 30 per cent, due to the rains. The rains have damaged the crop and hit the supply. Vegetables are reaching the wholesale market in a limited quantity. It may take some days for prices to come down.”

A fruit seller said, “The supply has got disrupted but the prices are so far the same. If there are more rains the prices may rise.”
