New Delhi, January 10

Philip Parham, United Kingdom’s envoy to the Commonwealth, believes that Brexit will not weaken the forum or Britain’s leadership. Parham, who is meeting Indian diplomats to discuss collaboration on Commonwealth agendas such as blue economy and sustainable marine economy, says the impetus will continue to the organisation.

“It is true to say that although the UK will not be leaving Europe, it will be leaving European Union (EU). The process of leaving EU has already given a new boost to the UK’s desire to build up its trade and investment relations with other countries beyond Europe. The work on issues such as connectivity agenda or other programmes to increase trade within the Commonwealth will be driven even more enthusiastically after Brexit.”

Parham also appreciated PM Modi’s presence at the CHOGHM meet in London in April 2018, as an Indian PM attended the summit after eight years. — TNS
