Dehradun (Uttarakhand), July 27

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat on Wednesday confirmed an incursion by Chinese troops into Chamoli district, located at the North-East corner of Uttarakhand.

“This is a matter of concern. Our border has been peaceful. We have asked to increase vigilance. I believe the government will take the necessary cognizance and the information is absolutely correct,” Rawat said.

He, however, said that it was a good thing that the troops didn’t touch one important canal in the area.

“Our officials had gone to measure the revenue line … as it is our responsibility ... there some Chinese activities were found,” he added.

According to sources, the Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) had sent a report about this incident to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on July 19, which was the date of incursion.

Uttarakhand shares a 350-kilometer-long boundary with China and similar attempts at Chinese incursions have been reported in the past.

The last reported Chinese incursion in the state was when the word ‘China’ was inscribed on rocks near Mana Pass in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. — ANI
