Two militants gunned down in Arunachal Pradesh

GUWAHATI: The security forces engaged in counter-insurgency operations on Thursday shot dead two militants at Shankapani under Kharsang police station of Changlang district in Arunachal Pradesh, according to Kohima-based defence spokesman Colonel C Konwer.

The security forces engaged in counter-insurgency operations on Thursday shot dead two militants at Shankapani under Kharsang police station of Changlang district in Arunachal Pradesh, according to Kohima-based defence spokesman Colonel C Konwer.

The official said one of the slain militants belonged to the anti-talk faction of ULFA or the ULFA (Independent) and identified as Moniram. The other killed militant identified as Hera Singh alias Tomba belonged to CORCOM, a banner organisation of Manipur-based militant groups.  Both the ULFA-I and CORCOM have bases inside Myanmar across the international border at South Arunachal Pradesh.

“Based on specific information, our troops carried out an operation in Shankapani in early hours today. Two of the terrorists fired on our troops forcing them to retaliate, leading to death of the two,” he said. Pistols, ammunition and grenades were recovered from the slain militants.

The security forces claimed that both the militants were involved in the attack on security forces at Namsai in South Arunachal Pradesh on January 24 last.
