Twelve days after a 72-year-old nun was gangraped and robbed at the convent of Jesus Mary High school at Ranaghat, the police have arrested two Bangladesh nationals — one from Mumbai and the other from Kolkata — in connection with the case.

Prime accused Mohammad Sheikh Selim (40) was arrested last night from a house at Nagapatti in Mumbai. Another suspect, Gopal Sarkar, was arrested from Habra, in North 24-parganas, today.

Selim was presented before a Ranaghat court, which remanded him in 14-day police custody. But Sarkar, suspected to be a trespasser from Bangladesh, was being questioned, said Deputy Inspector General (CID) Dilip Adak at the CID headquarter in Alipore today.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who recently reluctantly handed over the inquiry to the CBI following pressure from several political parties and others, expressed satisfaction at the arrest of the culprits by the CID.

The CBI was yet to formally take over the inquiry. But the Chief Minister hoped the CID would soon arrest other culprits involved in the crime.

The officer said Salim confessed during interrogation that he was involved in the crime.

“We will get more details after further interrogation,” he said.
