Truck mows down 5 on Kanpur-Jhansi highway in UP

Five people sitting on a road divider were killed and three others injured when they were hit by a truck here on the Kanpur-Jhansi National Highway, police said on Wednesday.

The victims were on their way to Bithoor in Kanpur for a dip in the Ganga when a tyre of their SUV got punctured and they sat on the divider while the tyre was being changed, said Suprintendent of Police (SP) Amrendra Singh. In the meanwhile, a truck coming from Jhansi lost control while trying to save the SUV in the middle of the road and hit those sitting on the divider.

The deceased were identified as Kavita (8), Rahul (26), Rajni (30), Ram Baran (35) and Kailasha Devi (50), the SP said, adding that the injured had been admitted to hospital.

The truck driver fled the scene leaving his vehicle behind, the SP added. PTI
