Amid deepening worries in the BJP over the prospects of a “mahagathbandhan” and vote bank slipping over to the Opposite camp, the party is sparing no effort to run down the ongoing feud in the ruling Yadav family in Uttar Pradesh. It described the latest developments as “a high voltage drama to secure the future of CM Akhilesh Yadav”.

The SP family feud is a “fixed match”, aimed at keeping the media and public attention away from the “failures” of Akhilesh government, BJP national secretary Shrikant Sharma alleged.

Quoting a HC order criticising the state government for not taking adequate preventive health measures, Sharma condemned the ruling SP and the rival BSP for leading the state downhill while the wealth of Yadav clan and Mayawati grew.

The prospects of a “mahagathbandhan” in UP on the lines of Bihar, which may end up consolidating anti-BJP votes, has the BJP worried. Ground reports suggest the Jats of western UP, who supported the BJP in the 2014 LS poll in large numbers, are upset with it on various issues. There is a “feeling of being dumped after being used” among members of the agrarian community. They also seem upset over the recent turn of events in neighbouring Haryana.
