New Delhi, March 3

The Supreme Court on Friday passed an interim order staying Bar Council of India’s notification disqualifying students above the age of 20 years for seeking admission to the five-year integrated law courses.

A Bench comprising Justices SA Bobde and L Nageswara Rao removed the age cap even as BCI pleaded that it had decided to relax the age limit by two years for such courses.

The Bench said the age cap was not in consonance with BCI’s efforts to promote legal education. The Bench stayed BCI’s September 7, 2016, notification and further orders on this aspect.

The BCI had also capped the students’ age at 30 for the three-year law course and two days ago decided to raise it to 45. These orders would also remain stayed by the Supreme Court until the disposal of cases by aspiring students challenging the validity of age limits for the taking the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT).

The Bench posted the case for final hearing in the third week of July.
