The Supreme Court today turned down Madhya Pradesh Government’s plea for stop monitoring the CBI probe into the Vyapam scam involving irregularities in the admissions to professional courses and recruitments for government jobs.

“We will monitor it for two-three months more and see what happens,” a Bench headed by Chief Justice HL Dattu told Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi who made the plea on behalf of the state.

The Bench expressed satisfaction over the progress of CBI probe and also acknowledged that the death of accused persons in the scam and witnesses in these cases had stopped after the SC ordered the CBI probe on July 9.

“How such deaths have stopped,” the Bench asked Rohatgi who appeared for the state government. The AG said even earlier the deaths had been few and far in between as less than 40 such incidents were reported over 5-7 years.

The Bench made the remarks after going through CBI’s status report on its investigations which was submitted in a sealed cover. Appearing for CBI, Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar said the agency had taken over almost all cases and appointed public prosecutors to pursue the cases pending in trial courts.
