Congress president Rahul Gandhi will choose a working committee, as the party plenary on Sunday moved a unanimous resolution bypassing the need for an election and authorising party chief to nominate members.

“In less than a dozen cases in the 130-year-plus history of the Congress have elections been held for the CWC. The convention has been to authorise the party chief to select a CWC, keeping in mind the vastness of the country, the need for general and regional balance and other factors,” Congress veteran Ghulam Nabi Azad said moving a resolution to authorise Rahul to nominate the CWC. The resolution was passed by a voice vote.

Every time a new Congress chief is elected, the CWC undergoes a change. The setting for the CWC election is the AICC plenary where the elected Congress chief addresses delegates formally after taking charge.

Rahul was elected the Congress chief on December 16 last year and formally addressed the first AICC session that concluded on Sunday. He had earlier appointed a steering committee replacing the previous CWC.
