New Delhi, June 5

Aiming to focus the energies of universities on to achieving academic excellence, President Ram Nath Kovind on Tuesday suggested the Governors to have greater interaction with Vice Chancellors (VCs) and think of developing a Centre for Excellence on a subject that would encourage students to pursue serious academic work.

“Each state university can develop a “Centre for Excellence” in one subject. With this, students can get an institution of eminence to pursue studies in the subject of choice,” the President said in concluding remarks at the two-day Conference of Governors here.

Urging the Governors to convene VCs’ meetings, he noted while many were already doing this, the agenda of such conferences could be decided in consultation with the VCs. For swift solutions, representatives of the state education and finance departments, as well as officials from the HRD Ministry, the UGC and other institutions could be invited, he said. — TNS

‘Vaishno Devi varsity sets an example’

I had the opportunity to visit Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University in April. I was happy to see the green university complex, enthusiasm of students there and cooperation by entrepreneurs in students’ interest. The kind of effort being made in the Jammu-based university can be adopted by other universities. Ram Nath Kovind, President
