New Delhi, July 23

The Congress today signalled hardening of stance on US President Donald Trump’s claim that PM Narendra Modi asked him for mediation in the Kashmir issue and demanded that the PM face Parliament on the issue.

Outgoing Congress president Rahul Gandhi led the charge saying, “If  true, PM Modi has betrayed India’s interests and the 1972 Simla Agreement. A weak Foreign Ministry denial won’t do. PM must tell the nation what transpired in the meeting between him & @POTUS.”

Officially too, the Congress said it would believe the PM only if he came to Parliament and said the US President was lying. “We demand PM Modi come to Parliament and respond to what US President said. We are not looking at Foreign Minister. We are ready to believe PM Modi, but he must rebut US President himself. Otherwise, there will always be an apprehension that India’s policy of bilateral resolution of Kashmir issue has changed,” Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad said. — TNS
