New Delhi, June 16

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called an all-party meeting to discuss simultaneous elections on June 20.

The prime minister, whose government and party has been pushing for simultaneous elections, called ‘One Nation, One Election’, across India, invited Members of Parliament to a debate on the national agenda on the 75th year of Indian Independence.

The issue of simultaneous elections—which envisions assembly and state elections being held concurrently—has been a subject matter of great debate in the country. Several Opposition parties have pushed back against the idea, with many fearing that it would be advantageous only to the party at the Centre.
