New Delhi, November 16

Spelling out the CPM’s poll strategy, chief Sitaram Yechury said it wanted ouster of the BJP in the 2019 General Election and of the ruling TMC from West Bengal.

The decision is bound to place Opposition parties in a quandary who want anti-BJP consolidation on every inch of the poll turf.

“The CPM’s priority is to defeat the BJP and TMC,” Yechury said.

Though the CPM’s antipathy towards the TMC, its nemesis in its long-held citadel of West Bengal, is well known, Yechury’s unqualified assertion at a time when the Opposition spectrum is trying desperately to float an anti-BJP axis assumes significance. The Left parties’ stand is that West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC head Mamata Banerjee has a tacit understanding with the BJP and helped it to expand footprint in the state.

The TMC has decided to organise a rally in Kolkata on January 19, ahead of the next Lok Sabha elections. Banerjee said almost all Opposition parties have confirmed their participation.
