NHRC issues notice to Jhansi SSP over gangrape of constable

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, over allegations of gangrape of a woman constable by her colleagues.

Taking suo motu cognizance of a media report that a woman constable was gangraped by her male colleagues in Maoranipur of Jhansi district, the Commission has issued notice to the SSP, Jhansi, seeking a report within two weeks.

“The Commission has observed that the contents of the report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights of the victim,” an NHRC statement said.

According to a media report published on the October 6 and forwarded by a human rights activist to the Commission, the woman constable, a resident of Mainpuri, was posted at Etawah Police Line.

The statement said the victim had come to Maoranipur for duty at a fair at Jal Vihar for 15 days. After the fair, when she was returning on September 28, she was enticed by two constable colleagues and taken in a car driven by another person, where she was allegedly gangraped by them. She was later admitted in a critical condition at district hospital in Etawah. — PTI
