SC closes case against man who ‘cursed’ Ayodhya case lawyers

NEW DELHI:The Supreme Court on Thursday closed a contempt case against an 88-year-old man for writing letters ‘cursing’ senior advocate Rajeev Dhavan for appearing against Ram Lalla in the Ayodhya land dispute case on behalf of Muslim parties after he expressed regret for using objectionable words.

The Supreme Court on Thursday closed a contempt case against an 88-year-old man for writing letters ‘cursing’ senior advocate Rajeev Dhavan for appearing against Ram Lalla in the Ayodhya land dispute case on behalf of Muslim parties after he expressed regret for using objectionable words.

“Why are you saying all these things? You are an 88-year-old man. Don’t you have respect for the law?” a five-judge Constitution Bench headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi asked N Shanmugam who had written to Dhavan cursing him for appearing against Ram Lalla.

The Bench closed the contempt case against Shanmugam after his counsel M Velmurugan said he has expresses regret for writing such letters to Dhavan. Meanwhile, hearing in the post-lunch session was cancelled as the CJI was unwell. — TNS
