UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday said it is a matter of utmost concern that the NDA government is hell-bent on subverting the Right to Information Act which was prepared after widespread consultations.

“The Centre sees the RTI Act as a nuisance and wants to dilute the status and independence of the Central Information Commission which was put on par with the Central Election Commission and the Central Vigilance Commission,” she said in a statement.

Gandhi said the solution of the law would disempower people and that the law had benefited 60 lakh Indians, especially people from the marginalised sections.

The law, she said, served to strengthen the foundations of democracy and now stood at the brink of extinction.
