Mumbai, December 13

At least 29 students of the Balvikas Vidya Mandir in Mumbai’s suburb of Jogeshwari fell ill after consuming the mid-day meal provided at the school’s premises, police said on Wednesday.

The incident happened shortly after noon when some of the students who consumed ‘khichdi’, served as the meal today, began vomiting and complained of nausea.

“Five students were vomiting and the rest complained of nausea and weakness,” a police spokesman said.

All the students are out of danger and are likely to be discharged this evening or tomorrow, police added.

The students who were ill were rushed to the Konkan Hospital nearby, according to the police.

All the students who took ill were in Classes 7 to 10, officials said.

The school authorities have told the police that most of the 450 students were served khichdi under the mid-day meal programme.

The food was not cooked in the school premises and procured from a women’s self-help group, the school authorities told police.

The SHG was appointed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.
