New Delhi, May 30

Aided by Cyclone Mora, southwest monsoon on Tuesday hit Kerala and also simultaneously advanced into some parts of north-eastern states —some parts of Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh.

The arrival over the Indian mainland in Kerala on May 30 occurred two days before the normal onset date of June 1.

According to the IMD, widespread rainfall occurred over Kerala during the past two days. Seventy-eight per cent monitoring stations reported rain in the past 48 hours.

It advanced into some more parts of south Arabian Sea, remaining parts of Maldives–Comorin area, southern parts of Lakshadweep area, Kerala and Tamil Nadu, some more parts of southwest Bay of Bengal, remaining parts of southeast Bay of Bengal, some parts of west central Bay of Bengal, most parts of east central and northeast Bay of Bengal and some parts of Nagaland-Manipur-Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh.

As far as North India is concerned, it will be sometime before monsoon arrives here.

While it is too early to predict, some meteorologists expect monsoon to land in the Delhi-Haryana-Punjab region around June 26-27. In the meantime, the region can expect western disturbances to keep it cool.

Thunderstorms are keeping the mercury in control in the region and currently temperatures are ruling well below normal (5.1°C or below) at most places over Uttarakhand and at many places in western Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi.

The Northern Limit of Monsoon (NLM) is currently passing through Kochi and Tondi in Kerala and Aizwal, Kohima and Deomali in the northeast.

Conditions, it said, were favourable for further advance of southwest monsoon into remaining parts of south Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep area and Kerala, some parts of central Arabian Sea, coastal and south interior Karnataka, some more parts of Tamil Nadu, southwest, west central and east-central Bay of Bengal, most parts of northeast Bay of Bengal and some more parts of northeastern states during next the next three to four days.
