The Left Front carries a huge burden of expectations of opposition parties to secure its bastion Tripura from the BJP who is trying to make inroads into the state in the February 18 Assembly elections.

Leader of the CPI in Rajya Sabha D Raja today said they will live up to the expectation and the Left Front is poised to form government for sixth consecutive term in Tripura.

“The BJP is trying hard to somehow get a toehold in the Left-ruled state. By virtue of being in power at the Centre it may make apparent presence in the state, but it will be nowhere on electoral horizon,” Raja said.

The CPI is constituent of the CPM-led front in the state and has one MLA in the 60-member Assembly. It will contest one seat in the coming elections.

The other constituents of the Front are the RSP and Forward Bloc.

The Left Front’s prospects have stirred the imagination in the non-BJP camp on account of the raging ideological debate within the CPM on having electoral alliance with the Congress. Although the issue will clinched by the party congress in April, the Tripura election will be held in February. Hence, any tentative hope of Left Front having an understanding with the Congress is off the table, till April.
