Lucknow, September 16

The All-India Riot Victims Relief Committee 1984 (AIRVRC) today submitted a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi alleging lack of progress in the SIT probe into the Kanpur Sikh riots.

In the two-page letter, also forwarded to Home Minister Amit Shah and Home Secretary Ajay Khumar Bhalla, AIRVRC has sought “necessary action against the authorities/SIT/UP Government to act upon the cases, find out the files, punish the erring officials and provide justice to the riot victims”.

After Delhi, Kanpur witnessed the worst violence following the assassination of then PM Indira Gandhi in 1984. The Justice Ranganath Misra Commission, appointed by then PM Rajiv Gandhi, had recorded 127 deaths in Kanpur. AIRVRC expressed surprise at 125 files, claimed to be missing, being cited as the reason for no progress in probe. — TNS
