New Delhi, July 2

As requested by the CBI, the Interpol has issued a Red Corner Notice against absconding diamantaire Nirav Modi, his brother Nishal Modi and his employee Subhash Parab. The three are accused of being involved in a Rs 13,000-crore PNB fraud. All 192 member-states have been asked to arrest or detain the fugitives, if spotted.

The notice, issued on June 29 on the basis of a CBI chargesheet in a special court in Mumbai and the arrest warrant issued by Special Judge JC Jagdale, was made public by Interpol on Monday. A senior Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) official said, “Red Corner Notice restricts movement as the  details of a fugitive on his travel documents are fed into the computers of immigration authorities of the member-nations. But this does not mean you can get the person back for prosecution. Besides the legal process, it mostly depends on the ties a country has with the fugitive’s host country.”

The CBI has provided Interpol four addresses of Nirav Modi, including one in Al Bayan, Dubai. The CBI had earlier tried to track his movements through a ‘diffusion’ notice issued through Interpol on February 15, but with limited success. The UK alone responded to the CBI request though reminders were also sent to the US, the UAE, Singapore, Belgium and France.
