Mumbai, June 26

Two hundred women prisoners, including former media executive Indrani Mukerjea, who is accused of murdering her daughter Sheena Bora, have been booked for rioting and misconduct at Mumbai’s Byculla jail. They were protesting the death of one of the inmates, Manju Govind Shetye (45), who was allegedly assaulted by jail officials. Jail superintendent Manisha Pokharkar and five guards have been suspended in connection with the inmate’s death.  The police said following Shetye’s death, Mukerjea had helped the prisoners plan protests and suggested them to use children of some of the inmates as human shields to break through police cordons.
