New Delhi, December 12

States and high courts are divided on the move to set up an All-India Judicial Service on the lines of the administrative and police services (IAS and IPS), Law Minister DV Sadananda Gowda informed the Rajya Sabha today.

“There is a divergence of opinion among the state governments and high courts,” the minister said in a written reply. The proposal on the Service was part of the agenda for the Conference of Chief Ministers and Chief Justices of High Courts held in April 2013. It was decided at the meeting that the issue required further deliberation and consideration.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on law and justice had recommended the setting up of the national-level judicial service in its 15th report tabled in May 2006.
