Mumbai, December 22

Severe space crunch in Mumbai may force the re-opening of one of the oldest railway stations in the country.

The Central Railways (CR) and the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) are looking to restart services from the Ballard Pier Mole railway station, which was started in the early 1900s and shut in 1944. CR officials say some of the oldest trains in the country such as the Punjab Limited and the Frontier Mail (now renamed the Golden Temple Express) used to run from Ballard Pier Mole railway station till Peshawar.

The train services were popular among British officials. MRVC officials said they were looking to resurrecting the disused lines of the Ballard Pier Mole station, which passes through the Mumbai Port Trust.

The station is sought to be connected to Wadala in South Central Mumbai, thus providing a “fast” corridor on the Harbour line of the Central Railway.
