In a big boost to the Congress, its student wing, National Students Union of India (NSUI) made a comeback in the Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) elections on Wednesday by winning the president and vice-president’s posts while the BJP-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) won the joint secretary and secretary posts.

Alleging fraud, the NSUI decided to move court against ABVP candidates being declared elected on two posts.
The main contestants for the DUSU presidential post were ABVP’s Rajat Choudhary, NSUI’s Rocky Tusheed, AISA’s Parul Chauha, and independent candidates Raja Choudury and Alka.
ABVP, which has a stronghold in DUSU, bagged two seats, that of the joint secretary and the general secretary.
NSUI’s Rocky Tusheed won the president’s post by a margin of 1,590 votes, while the party’s Kunal Sehrawat defeated the ABVP candidate by 175 votes.
ABVP’s Mahamedha Nagar defeated NSUI’s Minakshi Meena by 2,624 votes to win the post of secretary while party’s joint secretary candidate Uma Shankar defeated NSUI’s Avinash Yadav by 342 votes.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Deepender Hooda said that NSUI had won three seats but recounting of votes show ABVP’s unconstitutional face. Will go to judiciary, he said.
The Congress promptly hailed the victory as a triumph of “liberal values” and a “wake up call” for the prime minister.
Party vice president Rahul Gandhi thanked the students of Delhi University for reposing faith in the “Congress ideology”.
Nearly 43 per cent of the 1.2 lakh-strong electorate voted yesterday in the polls, where the Ramjas College violence and the subsequent debate on nationalism and free speech had dominated the campaign.

Last year, the ABVP bagged three posts while the NSUI won the post of joint secretary.
