Cong nominates Ambika, Sibal, Chidambaram for RS polls

Senior Congress leaders Ambika Soni, P Chidambaram, Kapil Sibal and Jairam Ramesh are among the eight party leaders nominated for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections.

Party president Sonia Gandhi on Saturday nominated general secretary Ambika Soni from Punjab, and former ministers--P Chidambaram from Maharashtra, Kapil Sibal from Uttar Pradesh and Jairam Ramesh from Karnataka.

Oscar Fernandes is another nominee from Karnataka with the Congress bringing in new leaders, Vivek Tankha from Madhya Pradesh, Pradeep Tamta from Uttarakhand and OBC leader Chaya Verma from Chhattisgarh.

The party will make one more nomination from Karnataka with Congress chief spokesman Randeep Surjewala saying the declaration will be made by the general secretary concerned, state chief minister and unit chief.

May 31 is the last date for filing the nominations for the Rajya Sabha elections.

Fourteen Congress MPs recently retired from the Upper House and the party is hopeful of getting back eight. The party said it was hopeful of victory in all nominations.
