CJI recommends Justice SA Bobde as his successor

NEW DELHI:Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi on Friday recommended to the Centre to appoint Justice SA Bobde — the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court — as his successor.

Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi on Friday recommended to the Centre to appoint Justice SA Bobde — the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court — as his successor.

Justice Gogoi has written a letter to the Ministry of Law and Justice recommending Justice Bobde as the next Chief Justice, sources said.

As per the convention, the incumbent CJI recommends the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court as his successor a month before retirement. 

Justice Gogoi, who took over as the 46th CJI on 

October 3 last year, had succeeded Justice Dipak Misra. The first person from the North-East to become CJI, Justice Gogoi is due to retire on November 17.

Justice Bobde will be the 47th CJI and will head the top judicial office between November 17, 2019 and April 23, 2021. Son of senior advocate Arvind Shriniwas Bobde, Justice Bobde completed BA and LLB from Nagpur University. He got enrolled with the Bar Council of Maharashtra in 1978 and was designated as a ‘senior advocate’ in 1998. — TNS
