BHU students protest Muslim’s appointment as Sanskrit prof

Banaras Hindu University (BHU) Vice Chancellor (VC) Rakesh Bhatnagar has clarified that the appointment of Dr Firoz Khan as assistant professor in Sanskrit is strictly according to the rules.

A section of BHU students are up in arms and staging a dharna outside the VC’s lodge to protest the appointment of a non-Hindu as an assistant professor in Sanskrit in the Sahitya faculty’s Sanskrit Vidya Dharm Vijnan.

Urging the students to give up their protest, the VC said the selection committee comprised the visitor’s nominee, subject experts, Dean of the Faculty of Sanskrit Vidya Dharma Vijnan of the department of Sahitya. “It was on the basis of his performance that Dr Firoz Khan was found to be the fittest candidate for the post,” the VC said. — TNS
