New Delhi, November 30

The Environment Ministry on Monday asked Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi governments to take effective steps to enforce ban on burning of all types of waste in urban areas.

In a letter to the chief secretaries, Ashok Lavasa, Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, asked the states to set up an emergency response mechanism to respond to calls received from citizens in this regard.

He also said the burning of urban waste was among the factors contributing to poor-air quality in and around Delhi.

He urged the three Chief Secretaries to make urban-local bodies and other regulatory agencies specifically responsible to ensure that burning of waste was not resorted to, so that the deterioration of air quality caused by burning can be checked effectively.
