Another IMA cadet dies, second death in 3 days

A cadet of the prestigious Indian Military Academy here died after being taken ill while participating in a 10-km run during training on the outskirts of the city three days ago.

Nabin Kumar Chhetri (23) who hailed from Darjeeling in West Bengal succumbed at a hospital yesterday. On Friday, Deepak Sharma (22) from Bathinda in Punjab died after being taken ill while participating in the training session.

Sharma and Chhetri were among seven cadets who suffered from exhaustion and dehydration and were hospitalised after the exercise 'Pahla Kadam' on Friday, a training session organised for first term cadets of the academy, the Army said.

“A total of seven cadets fell unwell due to dehydration and all of them were administered first aid at the exercise location," the Army said in a statement.

It said Sharma's condition was critical and he was rushed to nearby Lehman hospital at Vikasnagar where he succumbed to exhaustion and dehydration at 1.30 pm Friday.

Chhetri, along with other cadets, was shifted to the military hospital in Dehradun.

Sources said from there he was shifted to Mahanth Indresh hospital where he died yesterday.

“The other gentleman cadets have been treated at the military hospital and they are stable,” the Army said.

It said, "Wreaths were laid for both the departed cadets in separate ceremonies which were attended by all officers, junior commissioned officers and gentlemen cadets of the IMA." — PTI
