Spiritual leader Mata Amritanandamyi, popularly known as Amma, today handed over a cheque of Rs 100 crore to Finance Minister Arun Jaitley for the ‘Namami Gange’ project at a programme organised here.

The amount will be used to construct toilets in the poorest villages surrounding the Ganga.

An equal amount will be made available for a similar project to clean contaminated waters in Kerala on Amma’s birthday.

Amma’s next big endeavour will be a state-of-art multi-speciality hospital in Haryana’s Faridabad. To be built at a cost of Rs 1,800 crore, the 2,000-bedded hospital will provide service at subsidised rates. “I have been visiting Faridabad for the past 30 years. There is a persistent demand for quality healthcare from public. This is why we decided to open a hospital on the lines of AIMS (Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences),” Amma said after the function.

The hospital, slated to come up in a phased manner, is a 15-year project for which 100 acres has already been acquired.
