Allahabad HC gets 7 additional judges

The Allahabad High Court, the biggest high court of the country and the one with maximum vacancies, is set to get seven new additional judges.

Mukhtar Ahamad, Amar Singh Chauhan, Shamsher Bahadur Singh, Vinod Kumar Misra, Pramod Kumar Srivastava, Raghvendra Kumar and Pratyush Kumar have been appointed as additional judges of the Allahabad High Court for a period of two years with effect from the date they assume charge.

“However, the appointment in the case of Shamsher Bahadur Singh will be with effect from the date of assumption of charge till 14th February, 2017, and Pramod Kumar Srivastava with effect from assumption of charge till 28th January, 2017,” the Law Ministry said.

All the seven new judges are from the state judicial service.

The Allahabad High Court, with an approved strength of 160 judges—76 permanent judges and 84 additional judges—is functioning on a working strength of 76 judges.

It has a vacancy of 84 judges.

After the appointment of seven Additional Judges, its strength will go up to 83.

According to data collated by the Department of Justice, as on February 1, the 24 high courts of the country had a total vacancy of 347 judges.

The High Courts of Tripura and Meghalaya have no vacancy of judges. — PTI
