Age limit for vehicles won’t curb pollution: Centre to SC

The government has told the Supreme Court that banning private vehicles older than 15 years from plying on roads would not help reduce air pollution.

The government has told the Supreme Court that banning private vehicles older than 15 years from plying on roads would not help reduce air pollution. Instead of banishing such vehicles, the emission norms should be upgraded to combat pollution, the Centre said in an affidavit.

It also suggested that fitness of private vehicles should be tested every five years instead of after 15 years. “Fitness testing will prove whether the vehicle has reached its end of life or not. This is also the practice in European countries and North America,” the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways said in response to a PIL by activist MC Mehta seeking steps to check pollution.

Gradually upgrading the present norm of Bharat Stage 3 to stages 4 and 5 would be of help, the government said.
