An Afghan man has been arrested by customs officials at Delhi airport for allegedly trying to smuggle into the country gold valuing about Rs 32 lakh, according to an official statement issued on Thursday.

The passenger was intercepted after his arrival from Mazar-e-Sharif in Afghanistan on Tuesday.

His personal search resulted in recovery of a gold chain and a gold bracelet weighing 1.06 kg having market value of Rs 31.74 lakh, the customs department said in the statement.

The accused has been arrested and the gold seized.

In another case, an Indian man has been arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle out foreign currency worth over Rs 33 lakh.

The accused in this case was intercepted by the customs officials when he was proceeding to board a flight to Dubai on Monday.

“A detailed personal search of the passenger resulted in the recovery of foreign currency amounting to USD 50,000, equivalent to Rs 33.7 lakh,” it said, adding that the man was arrested and the currency seized. PTI
