Dhanbad, June 19

Three people, including the driver, were killed and six others were injured in Jharkhand’s Dhanbad district early on Tuesday when a car carrying them rammed into the parapet of a bridge on National Highway-2 and was left hanging on its edge, a police officer said.

The accident occurred around 2.30 am at Dardaha in Topchanchi police station area of the district when all nine of them, members of two families, were returning to Gujarati colony in Bokaro from a wedding in Aurangabad district of neighbouring Bihar, he said.

“It seems the driver lost control on the wheels and hit the walls of the bridge. Three of them--two women and the driver--died on the spot. Six others were rescued by local people, who then took them to Patliputra Medical College Hospital,: Shiv Pujan Baheli, the officer in-charge of Topchachi police station, explained.

A doctor at the hospital said two of the six injured people were in critical condition.

Khushboo Kumari, one of the survivors, said the driver was intoxicated.

“Around 1 pm, he stopped the car to consume alcohol. When we protested, he said he had the habit of driving cars in intoxicated condition,” she said, adding that most of them were sleeping when the accident happened.

Baheli said the police had started an investigation into the matter.

“We would be able to give further details in the case only after investigation,” he added. PTI
