Still remember the words of that old song… “if ever a devil was born without a pair of thorns, it was you Jezebel, it was you.” That was the 1930s movie Jezebel, which brought super-stardom to Bette Davis.

But this one is Jessebelle, the 2014 remake and unlike “a rose by any name will smell as sweet” this falls far below expectations. We start with Jessie Laurent (Sarah Snook) and her husband setting on a new life with him saying “you are the best thing that happened to me.”

Director Grenlert raises a number of questions, but there are no reasonable answers. Sarah Snook looks believable and this is creditable, considering the implausible story line. The movie is only 80 minutes long but seems much longer, a clear sign of it going nowhere!
