A child is like clay that can be moulded into any shape. The parenting plays a pivotal role in the upbringing of chidlren. Being an over protective or ignorant parents, both scenarios adversely impact child’s psychology.

“Parents who pay less attention towards their children leave kids anxious which impacts the latter throughout their lives”, warns head of Psychology Department of BCM Arya Navpreet Bhattal.

Bhattal said, “Parents are shunning their responsibility as they feel that they are sending their wards to the best school. An overprotected parent speaks for a child without understanding the real situation.”

He defined parents into different categories i.e. provoking parents (who always provoke each other against the child), helicopter parents (who give no space to their children), protective and dominating parents.

Bhattal said that what parents need to learn is the correct approach of child rearing so that the kids are able to take rational decisions in their lives. There should be a subject on life skills in all schools.

Child psychologist at Mohan Dai Hospital Harjeet Singh said, “Too much pampering can shape a child’s personality in such a manner that it might create problems for them in the long run which can hinder their success.”

Meanwhile, teachers complain that parents nowadays have become intolerant as a result, ‘guru sishya’ relationship has lost it’s sheen.

Anu Verma, a hindi teacher said, “Once, I complained a parent about their daughter. The mother immediately got offended. She said ‘what if my daughter commits suicide after being reprimanded. What will you do’... The problem is that parents have become child centric. This is sheer overprotectiveness.”
