The UNESCO instituted World Bioethics Day, the theme for which this year is “Respect for cultural diversity”, was celebrated by the UNESCO chair of bioethics unit at Christian Medical College. With over 400 attendees and 150 participants, bioethics has gained acceptance and traction.
The chief guest for the programme was Dr Parvinder Singh Jassal, president, Indian Medical Association, Ludhiana. In his keynote address, he appreciated the diversity and tolerance prevalent in Punjab. Dr Karamvir Goyal, surgeon and member of Punjab Medical Council, reminded the audience of the plurality of India and the need to keep ethics integral to medicine, especially in the fast changing healthcare scenario.
Dr William Bhatti, director CMC, said India’s diversity was her strength. Dr Jeyaraj D Pandian, principal, CMC, and chair, UNESCO unit, recounted clinical experiences where culture played a role in patient care.
Dr Anu Sharma, regional coordinator, UNESCO chair, bioethics, gave a lecture on autonomy and consent.
Events such as scientific poster, artistic poster, poetry writing, photography newspaper article writing, short films witnessed participation from medical, dental, nursing, physiotherapy and allied health students. Winners of the international competition were also felicitated.
