Women among 11 farmers booked for burning paddy straw

Continuing action against farmers for burning paddy straw, the Ludhiana Commissionerate registered several cases against them, including women farmers.

In one of the cases registered at the Koom Kalan police station, 11 farmers, including two women, were booked by the police for burning paddy residue in their fields.

The accused have been identified as Jaswinder Kaur, her two sons Rakesh Kumar, and Hardeep Kumar, Rann Singh, Balvir Singh, Gurdial Kaur, Bachitar Singh, Kulwant Singh and his brother Ajit Singh, Harman Singh and Hardev Singh, all residents of Bhamma Kalan village in Koom Kalan.

Investigating officer ASI Kuldeep Singh said these cases were registered on the complaint of the nodal officer of Bhamma Kalan village, who after noticing the paddy residue set on fire recommended registration of an FIR under Section 188 of the IPC.

He said some agricultural fields belonged to women farmers who had also been booked. Singh the accused were yet to be arrested.

The Focal Point police have booked farmer Sukhdeep Singh of Ucchi Mangli. He was booked after a police party noticed burning of paddy straw. The police said the accused had taken land on rent where he burnt paddy residue.

The Sadar police have booked farmer Dharminder Singh of Lalto Kalan for burning paddy straw.

Yesterday, the Ludhiana rural police registered 10 FIRs against farmers of Bhundri, Kaunke Kalan, Gohahur and Pabian. Nine farmers were arrested in these cases.
