Ludhiana, April 21

Ten days after the death of a 24-year-old undertrial, the Division Number 7 police have registered a murder case against unidentified persons. The undertrial, Livtar Singh, was found dead under mysterious circumstances in the jail bathroom on April 10.

Earlier, the jail officials suspected that he might have committed suicide by hanging himself. But, the autopsy report suggested that he was strangled or beaten to death. An SIT is investigating the case.

Following a complaint filed by the Superintendent of Central Jail, Shamsher Singh, an FIR with sections of murder has been registered. It was learnt that the Superintendent had formed a special investigation team to solve the case.

After receiving the autopsy report, the Jail Superintendent had written to the Police Commissioner for lodging an FIR with sections of murder.

Sub-Inspector Sudarshan Singh said a case under Section 302 and 34 of the IPC was registered against unidentified persons at the Division Number 7 police station on Saturday. Investigation into the case was under way.

“Earlier, a case under Sections 379 and 411 was registered against the undertrial, Livtar Singh, at the Shimlapuri police station. He was involved in a snatching case. The autopsy report states that he was strangled or beaten to death,” he said.
