Ludhiana, April 24

Officials of the local Special Task Force (ST) unit have arrested two drug smugglers and recovered Rs 2.3 kg of heroin from their possession.

The suspects have been identified as Gurjant Singh (27) and his brother Dharamvir Singh, alias Dharma (31), both residents of Baba Deep Singh Nagar, Tarn Taran.

In a press conference, the STF AIG, Snehdeep Sharma, said a tip-off was received by officials about two smugglers on way to deliver huge quantity of heroin, which they were carrying in a Maruti Zen car.

As per information, smugglers were to take the heroin consignment towards Amritsar. Accordingly, an STF team laid a naka at Bhikhiwind, Taran Tarn, where the Zen car was stopped for checking. During search, 2.3 kg of heroin was recovered from smugglers, who were travelling in the car.

The suspects told the police during questioning that they had been into the notorious trade from a long time and were in touch with several big smugglers.

The STF officials said police remand of the smugglers would be sought from the court for their further interrogation so that more recovery of drugs could be made. A case under Sections 21, 29, 61 and 85 NDPS Act has been registered against the suspects and further probe is on.

The STF unit has also nabbed a smuggler with 200 gm of heroin. He was identified as Mandeep Singh Deepa (26) of New Azad Nagar. He was arrested at a naka on the Kali Sadar GT road, Basti Jodhewal. The smuggler told the police that earlier he was into the mobile repair business, but left the profession about two years back and started the notorious trade of drug smuggling.
